American professional tennis player Madison Keys was forced to retire from her Wimbledon match with Jasmine Paolini on Sunday, July 7, 2024, after suffering a leg injury at 5-5 in the third set of their fourth-round match, according to ESPN. Madison began limping and eventually took a medical timeout. She returned to the game with her left thigh taped, but the pain hindered her performance.
In the final game, Madison informed the chair umpire that she was retiring from the match. Jasmine Paolini showed sportsmanship by telling Madison, “I’m sorry,” as Madison held back tears. It was clear she was heartbroken by the forced retirement.
